Pay is the first thing HR leaders ask about and the last thing job posts make easy to compare. So we pulled together the pay ranges employers published in the remote U.S. HR roles we featured in September and early October 2026, and grouped them by level.

Read this first. This is an analysis of pay ranges from past postings, not a job board. Postings change or close quickly, so every company named here is a data point from a posting we featured, not a current opening. If a role interests you, check the employer's own career page for its current status.

The short version

  • Across 34 remote U.S. HR postings with a stated pay range, the typical (median) midpoint was about $245K for executive roles, $166K for director, $148K for senior and $88K for mid-level and individual-contributor roles.
  • Posted ranges were wide: the typical spread was about 35% from bottom to top. Where you land in the band is negotiable.
  • "Remote" didn't mean the same pay or the same eligibility everywhere. Some postings paid roughly 22–26% more for San Francisco and New York, and one excluded two states.
  • 13 of the 34 postings also mentioned equity or a bonus.

How we built this

We used the remote HR roles from our U.S. editions in September and early October 2026 where the employer's own posting showed a numeric pay range. We grouped them into four levels (executive, director, senior, mid-level or individual contributor) and used the midpoint of each posted range. We left out postings with no stated pay and those with very mixed ranges.

This is a small, curated sample. It leans toward tech and higher-paid roles, and it isn't a statistical survey of the market. For wider pay context, see our guide to six-figure remote HR jobs in the USA.

1. The pay ladder

Level Roles Typical midpoint Lowest posted Highest posted
Executive (VP, CPO)4~$245K$150K$380K
Director5~$166K$110K$221K
Senior (Sr. Manager, Sr. Partner)13~$148K$95K$280K
Mid-level / IC12~$88K$48K$174K

Examples of past postings in the sample: a VP People role at $340K–$380K base, a Chief People Officer role at $260K–$280K, a Director of Talent Acquisition at $160K–$220K depending on location, and a senior People Business Partner role at $140K–$190K plus equity.

What it means: the biggest jump in this sample is between mid-level and senior roles, not between senior and director. If you're weighing a move from specialist to senior partner, that's where the posted pay changed most.

2. HRBP and leadership roles paid the most among the functions we could compare

People partner and HR leadership roles had a typical midpoint of about $165K (10 roles). Talent acquisition roles came in around $140K (11 roles), but they split sharply by seniority: recruiter-level roles clustered near $88K, while senior and director-level TA leadership roles posted ranges from $120K to $220K.

Payroll, total rewards and HR operations roles had smaller samples and lower typical pay, so we don't draw conclusions from them. If you work in a category with few postings, see how others were featured in our USA remote HR jobs page.

3. The bands are wide, which helps you

The typical posted range spanned about 35% from bottom to top. A "$120K–$160K" range is a $40K question. Before you accept an offer, ask where in the band the budget sits and what moves a candidate up it.

4. "Remote" has fine print

Three patterns showed up repeatedly:

  • Location-based pay. One director-level TA posting listed $160K–$175K for typical U.S. markets and $195K–$220K for San Francisco and New York, roughly 22–26% higher.
  • State exclusions. One senior People Partner posting said the employer couldn't hire in California or Massachusetts, even though it was fully remote.
  • Work authorization. Several postings required existing U.S. work authorization with no sponsorship, and some limited eligible states or time zones.

What it means: read the eligibility lines before the pay. A great number on a posting you aren't eligible for is a distraction. Our remote HR jobs across all 50 states guide covers how location rules can vary, and our Fortune 500 remote HR jobs guide is a useful starting point for larger employers.

5. Equity and bonus show up more at the top

13 of the 34 postings mentioned equity, stock options or a target bonus alongside base pay, more often at the senior and executive levels. If you compare offers, compare total pay, not just base.

What to do with this

  1. Place yourself in the ladder by level, not by title.
  2. Ask about band position, location pay and equity in the first conversation.
  3. Check state and work-authorization rules before you apply.
  4. Remember this is a snapshot. Postings close, ranges change, and one company's range isn't the market.

About these numbers

Pay figures are the ranges employers published in the postings we featured. Where a posting reported several locations, we used the broadest U.S. range or noted the split. We didn't independently confirm what any employer actually paid, and postings may have since closed or changed.
